No Tesla Wall Connector? No problem! Gen the Gen 2 NEMA 14-50 adaptor!
First things first. I have a local electrician install a NEMA 14-50 outlet. The NEMA 14-50 adapter will allow our Tesla Model 3 Long Range to draw up to 32 amps (7.6 kW at. 240 volts).
Do you have a NEMA 14-50 outlet in your garage?
To use the Tesla Gen 2 NEMA 14-50 Adapter, you will need two things: The Mobile Connector, which comes as standard equipment with all new Tesla vehicles, and a NEMA 14-50 outlet.
What is a NEMA 14 50 outlet?
NEMA 14-50 outlets are used for electric cooking ranges, and either may also be used for home charging of electric vehicles. NEMA 14-50 devices are frequently found in RV parks since they are used for “shore power” connections of larger recreational vehicles. Also, it was formerly common to connect mobile homes to utility power via a 14-50 device. Newer applications include Tesla’s Mobile Connector for vehicle charging, which formerly recommended the installation of a 14-50 receptacle for home use.
By the way, “NEMA” stands for National Electrical Manufacturers Association. NEMA is the largest trade association of electrical equipment manufacturers in the United States. Founded in 1926, it advocates for the industry and publishes standards for electrical products.
Back to the question at hand, do you have a NEMA 14-50 outlet? If you don’t, I recommend you have one installed. An electrician will charge you $400 to $600 for the installation. I paid $450.
Using the 240 Volt NEMA 14-50 Outlet with the Tesla Gen 2 NEMA 14-50 Adapter
The Mobile Connector is included as standard equipment with all new Tesla vehicles. This is a 20-foot-long cable with interchangeable adapters that can be used to plug into different outlets. This guide provides detail on installing a NEMA 14-50 outlet for home charging with the Mobile Connector. Adapter purchased separately.
Attach the adapter to Mobile Connector, plug into the outlet, and then into the vehicle to begin charging. The NEMA 14-50 adapter will allow a Tesla car to draw up to 32 amps (7.6 kW at 240 volts). Recharge speeds will vary between different models.
